TCI 6 Speed Automatic An interesting thing that I ran into this week. I went over to my engine builder and we got TCI on the phone to order the 6 speed transmission. so we were on the phone with TCI going down the check list of can the 6 speed automatic handle the 800 foot pounds of torque, "check". Can it handle a 1000 hp ," check". Does it has engine braking , NO !!! what--- ,NO-- he says again. Brakes squealing full stop. WTF they claim it is for pro touring and racing ???? Drag racing I guess . So who thought that was a good idea??. The take away from this is be sure you ask a lot of questions and have a check list of what you need and want and don't ASSUME anything. 6x Six-SpeedSix forward gears & fully programmable automatic or manual shifting for improved acceleration & fuel economy at cruising speedsEZ-TCU™ Transmission Controller & 4-speed automatic shifter needed for standard automatic operationSelf-contained design eliminates clearance problems of external bolt-on overdrivesCompatible with all Chevy Small Block, Big Block & LS engines, as well as Chrysler & Ford - from stock to over 850 horsepowerDescription Chrysler Ford GM Misc Applications Pontiac Using the latest developments in drivetrain technology, TCI® has developed an innovative automatic transmission for Pro Touring, street and all-out race vehicles. Designed for GM SBC, BBC, LS and Pontiac applications, as well as Fords and Chryslers, the 4L80E-based TCI® 6x Six-Speed Automatic Transmission is a fully programmable transmission that gives you six forward gears (2.97, 2.23, 1.57, 1.18, 1.00, 0.75) for quicker acceleration and increased fuel economy at cruising speeds and is capable of handling up to 850 horsepower. These versatile transmissions from TCI® feature a compact design, allowing them to work in a variety of performance applications. Originally designed for GM applications, TCI® now offers complete kits available for Ford, Chrysler and Pontiac engines. When used with the required TCI® EZ-TCU™ Transmission Controller and harness for shift point programming and the optional TCI® Paddle Shifter or Outlaw™ 2-Button Shifter set-up for manual mode gear selection, this automatic transmission gives vehicles the most functional and modern drivetrain combination on the market. To ensure durability, TCI® engineers run each transmission across a hydraulic tester valve body dyno and computer-controlled transmission dyno to ensure proper line pressures and top notch transmission performance. Proof of this Triple Testing process is included with each transmission, shipped in the form of individual serialized spec sheets containing test scores. In addition, each TCI® transmission utilizes the patented HDT Coating™ for cooler operating temperatures and improved drivetrain efficiency. Don't use that. Frank Castle is dead. Call me The Punisher I havent heard anything bad about it, but for what they are asking for one i am not suprised. I have 6X in my 64 Vette. 6X is a close ratio automatic transmission. 2nd - 5th gear is similar to manual M20 close ratio tranmission. RPM retension between shifts is unmatched by any A4 automatic. Notice the drive ratio in each gear with 3.55 rear gear and what rear gear a T56 6 sp manual car would need to match the 6X ratio wise in 4th gear as well as come close in 2nd & 3rd. T56's 1st gear is it's only gear with better mechanical advantage than 6X, but it may be a little to much advantage as RPM lost between 1st to 2nd gear is huge even with perfect shift, taking engine out of it's power band. My 64 still has a 3.54 1:1 5th gear for a little more top end. 6X has average lost of 1600 RPM between shifts. Shift at 6500 RPM and engine RPM only falls back to 4900 +/- 100 RPM.
